Звездный городок 2011 THE EXCURSION AROUND STAR CITY Welcome to Star City, the tiny town where cosmonauts live and train. Star City lies at a 40 kilometer distance to the suburbs of Moscow. Many people are now familiar with the road from Moscow to Star City, which takes an hour by train to reach but much less by private car. Star City is officially called the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre and it is closely associated with the birth and development of home and world manned cosmonautics. After the launch of the first artificial satellite of the earth on October 4, 1957 it became obvious, that our country had all the necessary scientific -technical prerequisites for the flight of a man into space. The Cosmonaut Training Centre was opened in 1960, and it got the name of the first cosmonaut in 1968. The first flight of a man into space required enormous and intense efforts. It was Yuri Gagarin, who on April 12, 1961 for the first time in the history of mankind was launched into space on board the "Vostok" spacecraft. Then there was quite a number of important space achievements and the Centre took an active part in their implementation. That was the flight of the first woman-cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova and the first space walk of Alexey Leonov, as well as the operation of the first orbital "Salyut" stations. The Centre has accumulated unique experience of international crews training for missions of different duration and complexity. The majority of the inhabitants in Star City are cosmonauts, their families, and also scientists and engineers. Apartments in Star City are not sold. That's why there are no strangers here -only those whose life and work is connected with space. The town is divided into two parts -official and habitable. Our excursion will continue on Avenue of Heroes... Here the population welcomes cosmonauts returning from space. This fine building is the House of Cosmonauts which has another attraction — the Cosmonauts Museum. There's a statu of Gagarin flying through a ring that represents earthly limitations in front of the House of 1 cosmonauts. The Museum was set up on the initiative of Yuri Gagarin in 1967. There are many pictures of cosmonauts, unique photos, personal things and presents from Russian people and foreign guests. The office room of Yuri Gagarin was exactly reproduced from historical point of view. It is traditionally visited by Russian and international crews on the eve of their space launch. Outside the building there is a shop where you can buy some souvenirs. There is a concert hall where concerts, meetings and conferences are held. Famous actors, singers and musicians come to Star City with great pleasure. A bronze monument to the Earth's Cosmonaut Number One stands at the beginning of the Lane. Let's continue our excursion there... The monument was erected on the 18th of August in 1971 to mark the 10th anniversary of the first flight of a man into space by sculpture Duzhev and architect Zavarzin. Later it was decided to put a chamomile into Gagarin's hand. It's interesting to know that Valentina Ivanovna Gagarina lives in the house which is just opposite the monument. The official territory of Star City is behind the fence. There tourists can see training complexes and the large material and technical base for training has also been provided. The biggest in the world space centrifuge, where candidates in cosmonauts are "untwisted", is situated there. The hydraulics laboratory is the huge 12 m deep pool with the diameter of 23 m which contains the models of orbiting space stations as well as the spaceship "Soyuz" on the very bottom. Cosmonauts train in the laboratory before being launched into the outer space and (earn to live and work in the conditions of zero gravity. Star City offers all the necessary facilities and conditions for everyday life, work, active rest and leisure. We have some shops, various services, 2 hotels, a kindergarten, sport facilities, playgrounds for children and wonderful areas for having rest. Architects tried hard to preserve the beauty of the forest. This road will lead us to the lake... Actually we've got three lakes on the territory of Star City. But this one is the largest and the most beautiful. In summer we can swim in the lake, go boating, gather berries and mushrooms in the forest. In winter we skate and ski, play snowballs and make snowmen. Famous artists, musicians and sportsmen come to Star City with great pleasure. We are proud of Star City-our home! | |
